One More For The Herd

This picture was recently taken while traveling Paskenta Road between Flournoy and Paskenta. The small bundle you see lying on the ground is a baby calf probably no more than an hour old. I didn't stay long as the Mother was very nervous seeing me so close to her new born. (Just click on the picture for a larger view).

Eagle In The Pines

Recently when I was driving on Highway 36 West to make a delivery in Platina, I spotted this Bald Eagle roosting in a tall Pine Tree. The Bald Eagle is a fish eagle and the only eagle species living strictly in North America. It has a presence in every state in the U.S.A. except Hawaii. These eagles can have a wing span of up to eight feet and can weigh up to 15 pounds. It inhabits areas near large bodies of water where there are plenty of fish to eat and tall trees in which to nest and roost. Bald Eagles are monogamous and remain faithful to their mate until death. Females lay one to three eggs annually in the spring time, and the incubation period is approximately 35 days. (Click on the picture for a larger view).

Northern California Veterans Cemetery

Occasionally I make deliveries to the small community of Igo, California, and one of the deliveries is to the Northern California Veterans Cemetery on Gas Point Road. The cemetery rests on a hillside that overlooks Buckhorn Mountain and the gravesites all have the same small white headstone. It is a beautiful area and the grounds are well cared for. Message From a Rancher

One of my stops yesterday was about 8 miles beyond the small community of Paskenta. The picture you see is a warning sign from a Rancher who's message is "Coyotes, stay away from my livestock or this is what will happen to you". (Just click on the picture for a larger view).

Unusual Highway Advertisment

Recently this sign and crosses appeared on Northbound Interstate 5 between Corning and Red Bluff. I don't know who put the sign or little white crosses there but it took a lot of time and effort to so as the crosses ran about two miles along the Interstate. Today when I was through this area I did not see the sign or crosses so apparently they have been removed. (Just click on the pictures for a larger view).

View From Gate At Lake California

This is an early morning view you see as you exit the gate at Lake California. Over this mountainous range Highway 299 West winds its way from Redding to Eureka. This is the route that takes you pass Whiskeytown Lake, Douglas City, Weaverville, and Willow Creek (just to name a few stop over points) before you arrive at the Northern California Coast. It is a very scenic route and much of it follows the Trinity River. This river is noted for its placer and hydraulic gold mining, whitewater rafting and kayaking, and of course salmon and steelhead fishing. I haven't tried rafting and kayaking on this river but I have been out there gold mining and fishing. (Just click on the picture for a larger view).

The Post Office at Mineral

Recently I made a delivery to the Mineral, California Post Office on Highway 36 East. It was shortly after the big winter storm we had a couple weeks ago. The roads were all clear on this trip but you see by the snow drifts that the area was blasted with winter snow. Mineral is about 40 miles East of Red Bluff on the way to Susanville and is about 4,000 ft. elevation. (Just click on the pictures for a larger view).
